The origins of the Marist Missions in the Pacific were in Wallis and Futuna, two small islands belonging to the French Territories.

On Futuna, Father Peter Chanel and Brother Marie Nizier Delorme started the mission in 1837. They came on the ship carrying the first Marist missionaries to the Pacific.

Peter Chanel was clubbed to death at Poi, Futuna in 1841. He is the first martyr of the South West Pacific, and was canonised a saint in 1950.

The ship that brought St. Peter Chanel to Futuna left Father Bataillon at Wallis (1837). He was a strong and forceful character.

By 1842 he had converted all the people of Wallis to Catholicism, and was made bishop and Vicar Apostolic of Central Oeeania in 1843.

Where we work
There are just two Marist communities:

At Lano on Wallis, there is one priest and one brother
At Kolopelu, Futuna there is one community.
