Father Chevron and Brother Attale started the mission in Tonga in 1842. They stayed in Pea.
In 1852 the Methodists attacked Pea and destroyed the village. The mission was re-established in Mua.
In 1879 Father Lamaze of Tonga was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Central Oceania, which at that time included Tonga and Wallis-Futuna. Wallis-Futuna became a separate Vicariate in 1935.
